Sainsbury’s advert from 1999

‘The ad that killed Sainsburys’

I think the biggest problem with this advert is the patronising manner in which the male actor (John Cleese) is speaking to the female shop worker, especially as a huge part of the target demographic will be females. The advert is very cheap, bland and just plain boring, it’s not exciting enough to attract new customers, nothing jumps out and grabs your attention even when the female actress talks about how their customers can save money over other supermarkets it’s just not exciting. This advert was dubbed ‘The ad that killed Sainsburys’ and i personnally think that was down to poor marketing by Sainsburys, they focused to much on cheap deals hoping that would attract customers when in fact they should have researched their target demographic and aimed the advert at keeping them interested and attracting new customers for rival supermarkets.
